We welcome visitors to our quaint cellar winery and tasting room, cut into our hillside vineyard. An extraordinary selection of unique estate-grown wines await you. Group tours of 10 or more are welcome with prior arrangement by phone.

For over 40 years we have followed the the science and ethics of what is right when it comes to farming, winemaking and life. We build the soils by mowing the natural cover crop thereby not disturbing the mycorrhizae, capturing carbon in the form of organic mater and increasing the water holding capacity of the soil. The natural cover crop promotes a biodiversity of life that results in lower pest pressure and excellent grape health. All the skins, stems and lees (the residual sediments produced from winemaking) are composted and returned to the vineyard. We also feel that by introducing unique grape varieties in small blocks we are less prone to the problems of industrial scale monoculture that dominates farming these days.

Our winemaking is minimally invasive relying on creating concentration of flavors in the grapes in the vineyard, so we can share them with you in the bottle. Our dedication to slow aging and deft use of oak barrels in the process, produce depth finesse and smoothness. We look forward having you experience all we craft at Tanjuli Winery.

Tanjuli Winery 2012 Estate Carménère, Rattlesnake Hills, $32

By Great Northwest Wine on December 13, 2015

Tom Campbell’s résumé in the Northwest wine industry includes Chateau Ste. Michelle, Covey Run, the Woodhouse Wine Estates and his own Mission Mountain Winery near Flathead Lake in his native Montana, but his heart remains in his vineyard within the Yakima Valley’s Rattlesnake Hills. He cropped his Carménère, a high-density planting of 1,620 vines per acre, to 1.2 tons an acre. That resulted in the equivalent of three barrels of wine, and his bottling of this less-known Bordeaux variety is fascinating. His level of extraction and use of oak allows for a nose of blackberry and black currant among herbal hints of thyme and eucalyptus with black and white peppercorns. The pour brings cassis, boysenberry and pomegranate, a fruity mix that makes for juicy acidity and medium tannins, backed by a slice of red bell pepper. Campbell and his wife, Hema, suggest serving this alongside Beef Teriyaki and a variety of spicy or savory fare.

Rating: Outstanding!

Production: 70 cases

Alcohol: 13.7%

Tanjuli Winery 2013 Estate Picpoul Blanc, Rattlesnake Hills, $18

BY GREAT NORTHWEST WINE ON NOVEMBER 7, 2015

Rattlesnake Hills vintner Tom Campbell was on the ground floor of what would become Covey Run and founded Horizon’s Edge Winery. More recently, he’s dedicated himself to showcasing some obscure grape varieties, including this underappreciated white that’s native to the Rhone Valley. His high-density planting of 1,640 vines per acre lead to a production of 2.6 tons per acre, which he put through a slow fermentation in stainless steel. That yields aromas of apricot, canteloupe, dusty orange, baked pear and spearmint. The drink brings a rich entry of ripe peach and Golden Delicious apple, followed by bold acidity and a flourish of starfruit, lemon oil and tangerine flavors. The Campbells suggest serving this with Chilean Sea bass or fish tacos.

Rating: Recommended

Production: 159 cases

Alcohol: 13.8%

Tanjuli Winery 2012 Estate Pinot Noir, Rattlesnake Hills, $32

By Washington Tasting Room Magazine, Tasting Room Picks: Washington vs The World

Sourced from the winery's Rattlesnake Hills vineyard. Nose: Dusty dark red fruit, cola, fig, and a whiff of dried herbs. Taste: Supple, pure and elegant, with concentrated ripe raspberry, plum, black cherry and fig, leading to anise, crushed gravel and earthen spice. Fine sweet tannins grace the vibrant finish.

Taste the wines we produce

from our “little slice of grape heaven vineyard”

Carménère? Aglianico? How did unusual, Old World wines arrive in Rattlesnake Hills of the Yakima Valley?

Tanjuli celebrates wine as a labor of love and attention to detail; the magical synergies of old and new; the camaraderie and small joys of winemaking.

Many people thought that after 44 years of producing wine, Washington wine pioneer Tom Campbell would be looking at retiring. No way! Tom loves the grapes that come from the Rattlesnake Hills of the Yakima Valley, an area he came upon in 1981 thanks to UC Davis classmate Stan Clarke. Stan had Tom establish the white wine production for Quail Run Winery in Zillah in 1982, and in 1984 Tom and his wife Hema settled into the Rattlesnake Hills of the Yakima Valley to start Horizon's Edge Winery, eventually selling it to the Padgetts in 1999 to focus on other ventures in Woodinville and his home state of Montana.

But they couldn't stay away for long, and in 2005 they returned to plant a small, seven acre vineyard for the production of truly unique estate wines. Today, the Tanjuli “little slice of grape heaven”vineyard consists of Pommard Pinot Noir, Lampia Nebbiolo, Carménère, Mourvèdre, Aglianico, Sagrantino, Teroldego, Viognier, Picpoul Blanc, Orange Muscat and Black Muscat. Each small block of grapes is meticulously managed from vine to bottle, resulting in exceptional wines that are at once old and new, imaginative and familiar, rare and remarkable.
